Lambda-X Verhaert High-Tech has announced the opening of a new in-house Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) laboratory, marking a significant step in strengthening its capabilities in advanced optical imaging technologies as well as wider biotechnological applications. This facility provides a controlled environment for testing and demonstrating optical systems directly on biological specimens, bridging the gap between optical performance and biological relevance.
From concept to real-world validation
This lab allows researchers and engineers to validate instruments using a wide range of samples, including live-cell samples, yeast, bacteria, and any microorganism permitted under the BSL-1 biosafety regulations in the EU and Belgian norms. By working with these safe specimens, Lambda-X can evaluate how technologies perform under real-world conditions before they reach the customer. This hands-on testing makes it possible to refine instruments more effectively and accelerate innovation.
At the heart of breakthrough imaging lies a simple but powerful idea: meaningful biological data starts with excellent optics. Our new lab helps us ensure that the technologies we develop not only perform on paper but deliver in the microscope room and real-world scenarios,” said Aparna Srivastav, Project Manager.
Expanding OEM microscopy development
While one of the immediate applications is to advance Lambda-X Verhaert High-Tech’s OEM microscopy development — particularly in label-free imaging techniques such as spontaneous Raman spectroscopy and nonlinear optical microscopy (NLOM), including Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) — the lab is designed to support a much broader scope of projects.
The controlled BSL-1 environment opens doors to future opportunities such as imaging of complex biological structures like organoids, developing and testing molecular detection systems, enabling validation of medical devices, and point-of-care technologies.
Building these systems requires more than just optical expertise; it’s a multidisciplinary effort that combines precision optics, pulsed lasers, electronics, and software. With the biological lab in place, we can now make use of this engineering to reveal the inner structures and metabolism of living organisms,” added Didier Beghuin, Business Line Officer Life Sciences.
Strengthening collaboration and innovation
By integrating biological testing directly into its engineering workflow, Lambda-X Verhaert High-Tech reinforces its position as a CDMO trusted partner for life sciences, biopharma, and medical technologies. The launch of the BSL-1 lab highlights the Lambda-X commitment to pushing the boundaries of optical systems innovation, enabling new collaborations and applications across a wide spectrum of biotechnological domains.
