A new chapter: Verhaert fully integrates Lambda-X as LXO spins out

A new chapter: Verhaert fully integrates Lambda-X as LXO spins out

February 5, 2025 Posted by Olivier Dupont Corporate News

Lambda-X, a pioneer in high-performance optical systems development and production, has entered a new phase of its evolution with the full integration of its core business into the Verhaert group and the spin-out and exit of its ophthalmic division, Lambda-X Ophthalmics (LXO).

Imagine standing at the crossroads of space exploration and human vision—two worlds that seem far apart but, thanks to Lambda-X, have always been deeply connected.

Lambda-X started its journey in 1996 as a spin-off from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) microgravity laboratory, co-founded by Paul Verhaert, and quickly became a key player in custom space optics. With Verhaert as an early shareholder, the company contributed to projects ranging from optics for Earth observation satellites to the International Space Station laboratories, while also driving technology transfer from aerospace to terrestrial applications.

By the early 2000s, Lambda-X expanded its space-born expertise into ophthalmic metrology, developing NIMO, a groundbreaking inspection system for intraocular and contact lenses. Initially developed for the research of fluid dynamics in micro-gravity conditions, the technology was then used to enhance the accuracy and reliability of vision correction.

Fast forward to 2021, and the ophthalmic division had grown into a true “nugget” within the company, with hundreds of NIMO machines operating worldwide, trusted by industry leaders like Alcon, Johnson & Johnson, and Bausch & Lomb. To scale its impact, Lambda-X initiated a strategic spin-out, giving birth to Lambda-X Ophthalmics (LXO): a dedicated company focused on expanding its metrology solutions beyond hardware into software and global services.

This evolution reached a new milestone last year, 2024, with the acquisition of LXO led by Whitestone, an investment group listed on the Brussels stock exchange, marking a new era of strategic support for global expansion.

Following that, Verhaert further acquired and integrated Lambda-X as an autonomous business unit within the Verhaert group. This move strengthens Verhaert’s position in high-tech systems and ensures that Lambda-X continues to drive cutting-edge advancements in its field.

From its origins in space technology to its impact on everyday vision correction, Lambda-X’s journey underscores the power of innovation and cross-industry expertise.

Now, with its core business fully integrated into Verhaert and LXO charting its independent path, both entities are set to drive the next generation of technological innovation in their respective fields.
