
In April 2023, the ESA JUICE mission (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer) launched aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. Weighing 6.2 tons and equipped with 10 scientific instruments, a 2.5-meter antenna, and large solar arrays, JUICE has embarked on an eight-year journey to Jupiter and its three large moons: Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
A central goal of the mission is to study the icy oceans of these moons and assess whether they may have once been suitable habitats for life. To reach Jupiter, the spacecraft will perform four flybys of Earth, the Moon, and Venus — gaining the speed needed for its long voyage.
Lambda-X contributed the custom optics for JUICE’s monitoring cameras, enabling operators to follow key events such as the deployment of the solar panels, the probe’s journey through space, and its operations once in orbit. These optics ensure the spacecraft and its scientific hardware remain in good condition throughout the mission.
This contribution builds on Lambda-X’s long-standing expertise in space optics, supporting Europe’s largest planetary exploration mission to date and advancing our understanding of the outer solar system.
