
On 11 December 2022, the Rashid lunar rover was launched as part of the Emirates Lunar Mission, developed by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC). The rover was transported to the Moon on board ispace’s Hakuto-R lander, marking the first lunar mission undertaken by the United Arab Emirates.
Rashid carries a suite of instruments designed to study the lunar surface, among which are three CASPEX cameras equipped with Lambda-X High-Tech optics. These cameras will provide wide-angle and close-up views of the terrain, supporting both navigation and scientific investigations. Imaging the lunar soil at different scales will help researchers better understand its structure, properties, and interaction with the harsh lunar environment.
The rover’s destination, the Atlas crater in the Moon’s northern hemisphere, was selected for its geological diversity. Scientists expect that it could expose some of the most ancient lunar rocks, potentially older than those collected during the Apollo missions. Analyzing these materials may provide new insights into the Moon’s history and, by extension, the early evolution of the solar system.
