Spectroscopic techniques are even able to identify molecular compounds and in conjunction with nano-technologies down to single-molecule detection. This has opened a new and vast domain of opportunities that is named biophotonics.

What the future holds
In next generation biomanufacturing, we also observe several new trends where photonics will play a central role. For instance in the upstream bioprocess for the production of monoclonal antibodies, vaccines or recombinant proteins. Innovative quality control optical solutions can help differentiating proteins from waste through measurement of their respective size or properties in or around single-use bioreactors.
Light-based processing can also directly contribute to cell therapy processes. One example is the innovative photoporation process, in which cell transfection is achieved using laser light in the cell therapy workflow.
